Attorney General of India, also abbreviated as AGI, is the position of a chief legal advisor to the Indian Government. The person who is the holder of this post is also the principal Advocate to the Supreme Court of India on behalf of the Indian Government. The AGI is not a government servant and hence, is not debarred from the legal matters that are private to him. 

An AGI is responsible for advising the Government of India on the legal matters that are referred to them. They also perform other legal duties that come with the position and the ones that are assigned by the President. Moreover, they have the right to audience in all the courts in India along with the right to participate in the proceedings of the Indian Parliament, however, they can not cast a vote. 

Currently, Mukul Rohatgi is the 14th Attorney General of the country. President Ram Nath Kovind re-appointed Rohatgi for the position in 2020. He started his career as an AGI on June 30, 2017, and this will be his second tenure for the same.
