Answer: Paragliding
Paragliders are only propelled by wind, and is an engine-free, non-motorized aircraft form. Basic paragliding equipment includes an inflatable fabric wing and a harness attached by lines to the wing.
Though there are no engines involved in paragliding, with favourable conditions one can travel hundreds of thousands of kilometres using this. All paragliding equipment can be packed into a bag and carried easily.
Interestingly, this adventure sport is also wheelchair friendly. Paragliding is different from handgliding insofar as the shape of the gliders is concerned. The latter has a V shape while the former has a soft wing structure which takes an elliptical shape when inflated.
Many also confuse paragliding with parasailing, which is basically parachutes that people strap themselves to for fun activities at the beach. The adventure sport causes fear in many, but paragliding is actually very safe. Each of the 30 lines attaching the body to the wings is strong enough to support a person’s weight. Granted, there is a chance of the wing collapsing, but this is just likely to happen if one chooses to fly in bad weather. Modern paragliders are more secure and even collapses mid-air can be recovered from. Most paragliding accidents, thus happen due to mistakes made by pilots in assessing flight conditions or during equipment checks.
Pierre Lemoigne, a French engineer, was the first person to come upon the idea of the paraglider in 1961, but it was NASA who helped complete its design and turn the “sail wing” into so much more.
