The picture in question, Guernica, is one of the most famous products by its creator, the iconic Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso. One of the most notable Modernist painters, Picasso is hailed as the man behind the art movement known as Cubism. Along with Henri Matisse, an artist Picasso looked up to while growing up, he went on to be regarded as the two biggest exponents of modern art.
Although Picasso was born in Spain, he spent most of his life in France. Paris of 1920s, crowded with modernist icons like Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Salvador Dali, and T.S. Eliot, found its most radical artist in Picasso. His work has often been divided into five distinct periods- Rose Period, Blue Period, African-influenced period, Analytic Cubism, and Synthetic Cubism.
The painting in question, Guernica, was created by Picasso after the bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War by the Nazis (Germany) and Fascists (Italy) who were supporting the Spanish dictator, Francisco Franco. The painting was first exhibited at the 1937 Paris International Exposition. It was sent on a tour of exhibitions in order to collect funds for the war relief in Spain.
On 5 February 2003, the United Nations decided to put a blue curtain on a tapestry of the painting at its headquarters in New York so that it would not be visible while Colin Powell and John Negroponte argued in favour of the Iraq War.
