Russia and United States delegates engaged in a heated debate at the United Nations on Monday as security swells on Ukraine’s eastern borders.

Russian ambassador Vasily Nebenzya accused United States of bringing “pure Nazis” near Ukraine’s borders the country wanted to make “heroes out of those people who fought on the side of Hitler.”

The accusations from the Russian diplomats put Washington in the spotlight for “provoking escalation” at the border, while further denouncing estimates of Kremlin planning to invade Ukraine. The sharp deliberations were not one sided.

Diplomatic officials from the United States delegations did not hold back the criticism and counter-accused Russia for the security situation in eastern Europe. Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the United States ambassador, headed the American charge at the United Nations meeting.

In an attempt to counter Russia’s demand of NATO not spreading eastwards, Thomas-Greenfield said Moscow had “threatened to take military action should its demands not be met”, according to reports from the Washington Post.

“If Russia further invades Ukraine, none of us will be able to say we didn’t see it coming. And the consequences will be horrific, which is why this meeting is so important today”, Thomas-Greenfield said at the United Nations meet called by the United States.

Zhang Jun, the ambassador from China, also urged for “quiet diplomacy” instead of “microphone diplomacy”, according to reports from the Washington Post.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken didn’t make any visible progress in easing the tensions at their meeting in Geneva earlier this month. They are expected to speak by phone Tuesday, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.
