Surfboard fin, also known as skeg, is a hydrofoil mounted at the tail of a surfboard. It is used to help improve directional stability and control through foot-steering.
Fins can provide lateral lift opposed to the water and stabilize the board’s trajectory. This allows the surfer to control direction, maintain your speed and “cut” through the water, in a way that would be impossible on a finless board.
Fins on surfboards were introduced in the 1930s and revolutionized surfing and board design.
Surfboard fins can be in different numbers. They are found in different shapes, sizes, and materials.
Some of the different types are glass on fins, removable fin systems, flexible fins, and ADAC system among others.
The single fin setup is the original fin setup. The twin fin setup has two smaller fins mounted near the rail. The most common setup, the “thruster” is a tri-fin. Australian Simon Anderson came up with the idea of a three equal-sized fin set-up in 1980.
The four-fin set-up gets a little bit of both the characteristics of the twin fin and the thruster set-up.
