Answer: Arjun Erigaisi
Arjun Erigaisi defeated David Anton Guijarro in the ninth and final round of the 28th Abu Dhabi, Masters Chess Tournament. The Indian Grandmaster won the game with 7.5 points. In the tournament, he won six games and drew three.
The games he won were against Deep Sengupta, Raunak Sadhwani, top-seed Wang Hao of China, Alexsandr Indjic, Rohit Krishna, and David Anton Guijarro. Meanwhile, Erigasi tied against Evgeny Tomashevky, Jordan Van Forest, and Ray Robson.
The Chessmaster won $15,000 for his efforts. Erigaisi was born on September 3, 2003, and earned the title of Grandmaster at the age of 14. He’s the 32nd youngest player to receive this honour and the 54th Grandmaster from India. In 2015, he won silver at the Asian Youth Championships in Korea and became the first grandmaster from Telangana in 2018.
The final was headed for a draw until the Spaniard made an error in judgment which Erigaisi caught and forced a win out of the situation. It also helped him earn 22 rating points. This placed the Indian behind fellow countrymen Viswanathan Anand and D. Gukesh, in rankings.
After the win, coach Srinath Narayanan commented “His victory is incredibly impressive”, adding, “The tournament had a pretty strong field. There were a lot of players above 2600. Usually, a score of 6.5 or 7 is enough to become champion.”
The coach continued “His progress in recent months has been a very pleasant surprise. He has always been capable. But sometime around 2021, he started believing in himself more. The speed and magnitude of his progress was something I did not expect”.
