Three off-duty Dutch commandos, who are in the United States for training exercises, were shot and wounded outside Hampton Inn, Indianapolis, Indiana, where they were residing, on Friday night, the Dutch Defense Ministry said in a statement.

The incident took place at around 3:30 am ET in the entertainment district of Indianapolis. According to the police, three men of foreign nationality were found outside their hotel with gunshot wounds and were transported to the nearby hospitals soon.

One of the Dutch commandos who was shot was found in critical condition, the statement by the Dutch authorities said. According to the statement, the soldiers were in the United States for training purposes and city police have begun investigations into the shooting. However, as of now, no arrests have been made.

An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) official told Fox 59 that a possible altercation happened at a different location away from the hotel earlier that night.

The Dutch ministry has said that the families of the victims have been notified about the incident as the US authorities continue their investigation.

“Right now the information we’re willing to disclose is that it was not something that occurred inside the hotel,” an IMPD officer said.

“It was a previous altercation we believe at another location. It did not happen inside the Hampton, the actual occurrence was outside,” he added.

The Indiana National Guard later said that wounded soldiers were training at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center, which is situated around 40 miles southeast of Indianapolis. They also added that the training center is used by the Department of Defense (DoD) and “other allies” primarily for training purposes.

“The Dutch soldiers visited Indianapolis at the end of their duty day. Our thoughts and prayers are with the soldiers and families during this difficult time,” the Indiana National Guard said.
