Light Street Animal Hospital shooting: Baltimore Police respond to nonfatal incident, school under lockdown

Baltimore Police on Monday morning responded to a nonfatal shooting incident in the Riverside neighborhood, city officials said.

City Councilman Eric Costello said there was a shooting at the Light Street Animal Hospital at 1601 Light Street. Whie everyone was evacuated from the hospital, a nearby school was placed under lockdown. 

The Baltomore Police were on scene of a ‘barricade situation’. They were called to the 1600 block of Light Street following the shooting. Authorities on social media said that residents within one block of the area have been asked to leave their homes.

Nearby Thomas Johnson Elementary/Middle School was placed on lockdown as SWAT officers responded and a police helicopter circled above.

Monday was the first day of the new school year for Baltimore city students.

Costello added that the shooter remained barricaded inside the animal hospital. Other details were not revealed. 

Thomas Johnson parents were notified that the school remained open but a lockdown status meant no one could leave or enter premisis. 

“We are taking this step as a precaution, and no students or staff are in danger. However, we will remain in lockdown until the situation in the neighborhood is resolved,” the message to parents said.

Justin Fenton of The Baltimore Banner later reported on Twitter that police have confirmed that a  victim was non-fatally wounded and has been taken to hospital.

The victim is Dr. John C. Trujillo (Dr. T), according to employees of Light Street Animal Hospital.

“Employees tell me Dr. T was about to start a survey [SIC] when he was short [SIC]. The dog was under anesthesia. Patient (dog) has been transferred to another hospital for their surgery. About eight employees and three dogs (one sedated) evacuated the animal hospital after the shooting, all without incident,” Ben Conarck of The Baltimore Banner tweeted.
