There is no reason for the United States to believe that China wishes to get involved in the crisis developing at Ukraine’s borders, as the country faces imminent threats of invasion from Russia. US Defense Department spokesperson, John Kirby, said as much at the Full Court Press news show.

As per Sputnik news agency, Kirby said, “I leave it for the Chinese leaders to speak for themselves. But we see no indication that China’s going to get involved here in any meaningful way,” when asked about the possibility of China backing Russia, as tensions rise between Moscow and NATO countries.

He further added that if Russia plans on going forth with the invasion, the country could be looking at “severe economic consequences” and further isolation within the global community. Washington is already threatening sanctions, and President Biden is bent on sending troops to eastern Europe as a deterrent.

However, Russia has claimed that the US is merely making the situation sound more alarming, and has accused the NATO countries of creating hysteria against Moscow. President Vladimir Putin has maintained the stance that Russian troops can move freely within their sovereign territory, and NATO is merely using this opportunity to place troops close to Russian borders.

Even the Ukrainian president has accused the US of blowing the situation out of proportion, saying that he’s on the ground level and knows of no imminent plans of Moscow’s invasion.

Despite the US also taking the stance that China is not likely to get involved, in a recent phone call with Beijing, it was made clear that China expects the US to take cognizance of Russia’s demands seriously.

The US has been locking horns with Russia over Ukraine’s entry into NATO, which the latter has asked to block. Further, Russia has asked for decreased military presence in eastern Europe.
