T20 World Cup: New Zealand win in Australia for the first time in 11 years

New Zealand
defeated Australia by 89 runs in the T20 World Cup match on Saturday, October 22 at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
The last
time the Kiwis had won a match in Australia was back in 2011, 11
years ago. The New Zealand team lost 15 consecutive matches in Australia across
formats since then. The last victory was in the Hobart Test in 2011 when Trent
Boult made his international debut.

Ahead of
the match, Kane Williamson, the New Zealand skipper had said: “We haven’t
thought too much about that. Nice to play against Australia first up, and it
should be a good game.”
“They know
the conditions well. They’re very clinical at home and in most places that they
play, which is a reflection of where they stand in the game. So there is that
respect. We know that we have a number of match-winners throughout, and the
team’s looking forward to the [competition]. We’ve had a number of good clashes
[with Australia] over the years and a number of good series as well, and I
guess most recently probably the last World Cup.”

Australia
and New Zealand have gone head-to-head in 196 cricket matches since the two
neighbours started playing each other in 1946. The Aussies have dominated the
record winning 136 of these 196 matches. The Kiwis have won only 57, but their
record has improved over the years.
Australia
and New Zealand have played 42 Tests so far. Australia has won 34 and New
Zealand eight. The Aussies have a win percentage of 80.95%.

In One-Day
Internationals, the two sides have gone head-to-head 134 times. Australia has
won 95 matches registering a win record of 70.89%. New Zealand have won 39.
Prior to
Saturday’s match, Australia and New Zealand had played 15 T20 Internationals.
Australia winning 10 of them and New Zealand 4. One match ended in no result.
