Zomato, an Indian multinational restaurant aggregator and food delivery company, faced an outage and was down for almost an hour around 21:45pm IST on Thursday. Several other websites and apps, including Paytm, Disney+ Hotstar and Sony LIV, faced major outages due to issues with internet infrastructure company Akamai Technologies.

Other than this, several gaming services in the United States were also down for about an hour. These included PlayStation, Steam, Fortnite among others.

Akamai tweeted about its outage saying, “Akamai is experiencing a service disruption. We are actively investigating the issue and will provide an update in 30 minutes.”

Akamai Technologies said it fixed an issue with its Edge DNS service, which caused widespread outages across the internet on Thursday evening.

“We have implemented a fix for this issue, and based on current observations, the service is resuming normal operations. We will continue to monitor to ensure that the impact has been fully mitigated,” the company said.

The company, however, ruled out any cyber-attack.

“We are continuing to monitor the situation and can confirm this was not a result of a cyberattack on the Akamai platform,” the company confirmed.

According to media reports, FedEx, Delta Airlines, HSBC, McDonald’s, Fidelity, the US Securities and Exchange Commission’s document search site, Airbnb, British Airways and others were affected. However, most of the sites were back up and running in under an hour.

For Akamai, this is the second outage in two months. The company had faced service disruptions with its hosting platforms last month, as well. It was caused by an issue with the Fastly CDN, whose clients included popular websites like Amazon, Spotify, Twitch, Shopify and Etsy. The company had then clarified that the outage was caused after one of its customers changed settings.

According to Internet outage tracker DownDetector, the outage reportedly started around 8.55pm on Thursday evening.

Before that in April, a big outage involving Google happened. It caused Gmail, Google Docs, Google Drive and other Google services to go down.
