UNICEF Day 2021: History and significance to share

December 11 is celebrated as UNICEF Day. The aim is to spread awareness about saving a child’s life and helping them fulfil their potential. Various campaigns and donation drives are arranged on this day.

The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) was established in 1946 by the United Nations after World War II to help children whose future was at risk. Later, it became a permanent agency of the UN in 1953. It has a presence in almost 192 countries and territories. The organisation provides supplies, assistance, education, and looks at the general welfare of children. It also focuses on disease prevention, treatment for mothers and children with HIV.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, UNICEF also focuses on mental health and vaccination of children. It also took an interest in children’s education during the lockdown. The theme is to provide opportunities across the globe and work for a better future for children.

UNICEF has received various awards and appreciation, including the Nobel Peace prize in 1965 and the Indira Gandhi prize in 1989. It worked with the World Health Organisation in 2020 to provide relief for Covid-19 victims across the globe.
