The International Mountain Day is observed every year on December 11. This day was officially declared by the United Nations General Assembly Resolution in the year 2003. It is celebrated in order to raise awareness about mountains and their communities.

It aims to acknowledge the development and social challenges faced by mountain communities. This year’s theme for the International Mountain Day is Sustainable Mountain Tourism.

As mountains are a big chunk of tourism all around the world, the United Nations aims to focus on sustainability in tourism. Sustainable tourism gives way to more livelihood opportunities, ecological preservation, poverty alleviation, community uplift and biological conservation.

Mountain areas continue to face various threats that endanger the flora and fauna, as well as local communities. According to the United Nations, mountains are home to 15% of the world population and provide essential resources like freshwater and wood.

This day also aims to preserve the culture and traditions of local mountain communities, who have faced negligence and oppression in these past years of industrialization and modernization.

The global pandemic also had a significantly big impact on mountain life and tourism, with Covid restrictions cutting off the main source of livelihood for many mountain communities.

Climate change has also deeply jeopardized mountain areas. Melting ice caps, dying animals and natural disasters like landslides have endangered mountains.

The United Nations urges people to preserve and protect mountains and sustain their ecology.
