Former president Donald Trump was found guilty of sexually abusing E. Jean Carroll in his battery and defamation trial but not raping her.

The jury, which consisted of 6 men and 3 women deliberated for only 3 hours before reaching a unanimous verdict against the 45th POTUS on Tuesday. They found the former president liable for defaming Carroll and sexually abusing her with forcible touching that injured her, but not for rape.

As a result of the verdict, Carroll was awarded $5 million in damages. This verdict may further complicate the former president’s future election bid in 2024.

Carroll alleged that Trump sexually assaulted her in a Manhattan department store changing room in 1995 or 1996. She claimed he falsely accused her of fabricating the story and was suing for compensatory and punitive damages.

The U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan gave written directions to the jury, instructing them to determine whether the “preponderance of the evidence” establishes that Trump “raped,” “sexually abused,” or “forcibly touched” Carroll. The jury selected alternatives two and three.

Additionally, the jury was asked to rule on whether Trump’s actions were “willfully or wantonly negligent, reckless, or done with a conscious disregard of Ms. Carroll’s rights.” They said yes.

Additionally, the jury determined that Trump’s rhetorical criticisms of Carroll in his social media posts were “defamatory,” “false,” and made “with actual malice.”

Trump, who was not present at the trial, has maintained that he neither knew Carroll nor committed any sexual assault on her. Nevertheless, Trump won’t face any criminal repercussions after the verdict because this was a civil matter.

As the judgment was pronounced, Carroll and her lawyers held hands. She smiled and wore sunglasses as she exited the courthouse with her attorney Roberta Kaplan, then got into a car without saying much to the media. “We’re very happy,” was the only thing Caroll said.

Trump called the conviction a “disgrace” in a statement on social media, and his campaign team said that he will appeal the decision.
