For his involvement in the 2016 shooting death of Troy Ave’s bodyguard, Taxstone received a 35-year prison term. The former podcaster was convicted of murdering Troy Ave’s bodyguard at Irving Plaza in 2016 while attending a T.I. concert.
Taxstone, real name Daryl Campbell, was convicted guilty of manslaughter in connection with the case back in March and made his final court appearance on Tuesday (June 20). According to Inner City Press writer Matthew Russell Lee, after hearing from the victim family impact statements, the court in the case sentenced the defendant to 35 years in prison to be served consecutively.
Following the punishment, Taxstone allegedly blamed Troy Ave, with whom he had a physical altercation before pulling a revolver, shooting and killing Troy’s bodyguard Ronald “Banga” McPhatter. Tax added that he wasn’t acting provocatively that night and that he was merely carrying a gun for safety.
In connection with the murder, Taxstone also has a federal firearms case for which he entered a guilty plea in June 2017 but has not yet received a sentence. It’s not apparent if those sentences will follow one another.
Following a fight between Taxstone and Troy Ave. on March 25, 2016, a shooting broke out in the green room of Irving Plaza in New York City during a T.I. concert. Taxstone shot both Troy Ave and Ronald “Banga” McPhatter, the bodyguard for Troy Ave, during the altercation.
Troy Ave then took control of the weapon and was seen on camera opening fire inside the arena. The next day, Troy Ave was being treated for his wounds at NYU Langone Hospital when he was taken into custody and charged with attempted murder.
Taxstone was arrested on weapons-related charges in connection with the incident in January 2017 after a roughly 12-month investigation. He admitted guilt on the firearms accusation. He was charged with killing McPhatter in July of that year.
