Hollywood actor Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson have received Greek citizenship, the Prime Minister of Greece announced. He took to Instagram to share the news.
Posting a photo of himself with his wife, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Greek Prime Minister Kyrakos Mitsotakis wrote, “@ritawilson @tomhanks are now proud Greek citizens! 🇬🇷👍”.
The couple appear to be holding Greek passports in the photo. The couple and their children received honourary citizenship last year after Hanks’ role in spreading awareness about the 2018 Athens fire was recognised by officials. The fire caused severe damage to areas near Athens. The actor had taken to Twitter to share the news.
Rita, a part Greek, and Tom, a Greek Orthodox convert, have produced several movies highlighting the country’s community. “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” is one among them. The family also owns a house on the island of Antiparos in Greece.
“I’ve been Hellenic now for the better part of 32 years,” Tom said at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards earlier this year. “Greece is a haven… I’ve been around the world, I’ve been to the most beautiful places in the world, none of them tops Greece.”
