More than 6.6 million Americans have voted already in the United States as the people are rushing to cast ballots ahead of November 3 election, indicating a possible record turnout in the country, news agency Reuters reported quoting the US Elections Project data.

The turnout of 6.6 million people, that too less than four weeks ahead of election day, is more than ten times the number of people who voted in 2016 at this time, the Elections Project said, which complies the early voting data. The US Elections this time is a showdown between President Donald Trump and his Democrat challenger Joe Biden.

According to Michael McDonald of the University of Florida, the reason for the massive turnout is due to ‘expansion of early and mail-in voting in many US states’ as it is a safe way to cast vote during the COVID-19 pandemic. The turnout is also more as Americans are eager to “weigh in on the political future of Donald Trump,” McDonald said.

McDonald said that this turnout of people has not been witnessed earlier, that too so far ahead of an election, and added, “People cast their ballots when they make up their minds, and we know that many people made up their minds long ago and already have a judgment about Trump,” Reuters quoted.

Seeing the early surge, McDonald has predicted a record turnout of about 150 million people, who represent 65% of eligible voters that could be the highest rate since 1908.

The numbers have so far come from 34 states and the District of Columbia.

In the national polls, the US President trail far behind his challenger Biden.
