United States House Representative Matt Gaetz, who serves the first congressional district of Flordia, landed in the crosshairs of The House Ethics Committee on Friday for alleged sexual misconduct. 

Gaetz, who is already under investigation conducted by the US Department of Justice for similar allegations, has not been charged with a crime and has dismissed the legitimacy of all claims made against him.

Top ranking officials of the Ethics Committee, including Chairman Ted Deutsch said in a statement on Friday, “The committee is aware of public allegations that Representative Matt Gaetz may have engaged in sexual misconduct and/or illicit drug use, shared inappropriate images or videos on the House floor, misused state identification records, converted campaign funds to personal use, and/or accepted a bribe, improper gratuity, or impermissible gift, in violation of House Rules, laws, or other standards of conduct”, reported Associated Press. 

The investigation is expected to unfold sooner than it was being expected as on Thursday Joel Greenberg, who is a close ally to the Congressman, announced through his legal representation that he is likely to come into agreement with federal officials through a plea deal. This is likely to increase legal pressure on Gaetz. 

The Department of Justice investigation, which is in full swing, is being challenged by the legal team of Gaetz, who hired two renowned lawyers from New York recently. 

Gaetz is currently being investigated for being sexually engaged with a 17-year-old girl who reportedly travelled overseas with the lawmaker. Recent reports that suggested that Gaetz showed his fellow lawmakers nude photos of the women he had previously engaged introduced a new spiral in the case, even though no connection has been established between the two allegations.
