Hundreds of farmers have arrived in Ghazipur, close to Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border, to mark the one year anniversary of the ongoing farmers’ protest against the central laws. On their tractor-trollies, many of them brought vegetables, sacks of flour and lentils, spices, and cooking oil, asserting they are prepared for a long haul.

Since November last year, the Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU), an influential farmers’ union from western Uttar Pradesh, has been leading the charge at the Ghazipur border.

The BKU is a member of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), a farmers’ collective that is leading the protests for the repeal of three contentious farm laws as well as a legal guarantee on minimum support prices (MSPs) of crops.

“It has been a year of unmatched struggle mixed with happiness and sadness. We are fighting and winning. We will fight and win. MSP law is farmers’ right,”Rakesh Tikait, the BKU’s national spokesperson, tweeted in Hindi
