Liverpool began the game the stronger side and were rewarded for their efforts early on when Gerrard was brought down by Edmilson in the 13th minute. Ever reliable from the spot, Gerrard made no mistake and put Liverpool in front.
With Liverpool in lead, Barcelona responded by bringing on several substitutes and managed to level the game before half-time through a Giovanni strike.
The second-half saw Liverpool change their entire squad barring Gerrard, but it was Barcelona who made their mark on the game.
Phil Babb, brought on at half time, fouled Giovanni in the Liverpool box in the 53rd minute, resulting in a penalty for Barcelona, which Rivaldo comfortably converted to give the away side a crucial lead.

As the clock ticked on, Liverpool stepped up pressure on the away side in the search for an equaliser.
Garcia came close for the hosts in the 81st minute but hit his shot against the woodwork, and the resulting counter-attack almost saw Barcelona extend their lead to two goals.
However, Liverpool could not find the equaliser they were looking for and the match ended 2-1 to Barcelona.
