Moradabad Rural assembly constituency in Uttar Pradesh was won by the Samajwadi Party (SP) in 2017. Haji Ikram Qureshi defeated Hariom Sharma of the BJP by a margin of 28,781 votes.
The BJP had won 312 of UP’s 403 assembly seats in 2017, earning an absolute majority and ousting the Samajwadi Party. Yogi Adityanath, the MP from Gorakhpur, was made the chief minister.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) came second behind the BJP, winning just 47 assembly seats, Mayawati led BSP was third with 19 seats and the Congress (INC) won mere seven seats.
First assembly election on Moradabad Rural seat was held in 1957 after the delimitation order (DPACO-1956) was passed in 1956. It is the 27th constituency of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, India, as per the Delimitation of Parliamentary and Assembly Constituencies Order, 2008.

Moradabad Rural is an open constituency. It is one of five assembly constituencies in the Moradabad Lok Sabha constituency. Dr ST Hassan from Samajwadi Party (SP) is the current Member of Parliament (MP) from Moradabad Lok Sabha constituency.
In 2012, the Samajwadi Party had won the elections with 224 seats, the BSP was second, winning 80 seats, the BJP had won 47, and the Congress 28.
In the Assembly elections 2012, the SP won the Moradabad Rural assembly constituency by a margin of 22,736 votes. The winning SP Candidate Kunwar Servesh Kumar got 72,213 votes and the runner up Suresh Chandra Saini (BJP) got 49,477 votes. The voter turnout was 59.15%.
