IndiGo’s current Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ronojoy Dutta, 71, has resigned and will retire from the current position on September 30, 2022. Dutta will be succeeded by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines president and CEO Pieter Elbers, 52, IndiGo’s parent company InterGlobe Aviation said in an exchange filing.

Commending his service, Rahul Bhatia, managing director of IndiGo said, “The Board of Directors and I would like to thank Rono for effectively leading our business for almost four years with a steady hand through what has been the most turbulent period in the airline’s history and aviation globally”.

Who is Ronojoy Dutta?

Dutta is the Whole Time Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). He is an aviation veteran and has held several leadership positions in Planning, Maintenance, Finance and Information Technology. He is the co-founder, managing director, member of the management committee, and member of the investment committee at Achuthan & Co. LLC.

He completed his bachelor’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur and his Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from Harvard Business School.

Dutta worked with United Airlines for nearly twenty years. He has also been an advisor to both Air Canada and US Airways during their restructuring and was engaged in long-term consulting contracts with Hawaiian Airlines and Air Canada. He has served on the Boards of United Airlines, US Airways and Marsico Trust Funds.

He also has experience in the Indian aviation sector. In 2014, he became the chairman of the Air Sahara. He was appointed the president of Sahara Air Limited in 2006 and worked there till 2008.

Dutta, while commenting on his decision to step down, said IndiGo is in the “good custody of Mr Elbers” and that the future for IndiGo employees is “secure and bright”. “I would like to thank all the employees at IndiGo for the kindness and affection they have shown me over the past four years. As I move forward to the next chapter of my life, I will look back with nostalgia, fondness, and a tinge of separation regret,” he added.
