The Amavasya, New Moon Day, in the Hindu month of Sawan (around August) is called the Sawan, Shravana or the Hariyali Amavasya. New Moon Days hold great importance in the Hindu calendar. This year, the Hariyali Amavasya will be observed on August 8. It usually falls three days before the famous Hariyali Teej and is regarded as the most auspicious day for Pitru puja, paying homage to the ancestors.

Shravana or Sawan is a month dedicated to Lord Shankar. On the Amavas in this month people worship Lord Shakar and his wife Mata Parvati. According to mythology, Shankar worship can set you free from all kinds of troubles. Lord Krishna is also prayed to on this day. 

Temples in North India organise special pujas on Hariyali Amavasya. Due to the significance of worship to Lord Krishna, Mathura and Vrindavan celebrate the occasion as a festival. Krishna devotees throng Dwarkadhish temple in Mathura and Banke Bhihari temple in Vrindavan to sought blessings from him.

The Amavasya Tithi will begin at 07:11 PM on August 07, and is lkely to conclude at 07:19 PM on August 08.

Significance:

As mentioned above, the Hariyali Amavasya is a holy day to pat homage to the ancestors and seek their blessings in the form of a Pitru Puja. The four-step process includes Vishwadeva Sthapana, Pindadan, Tarpan and feeding Brahmins

Vishwadeva Sthapana: The first process is to consult a professional priest and gather all required materials to perform the ritual.

Pindadan: To donate food made from rice, cow milk, barley, ghee, honey, and sugar.

Tarpan: Tarpan is offering sesame seeds, barley, kush grass, white flour along with water.

Feeding Brahmins: The Pitru Puja concludes by offering food to Brahmins.

The Hariyali Amavasya falls during Shravana month and it corresponds to Ashadha Amavasya, which is observed in states of Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat. These states follow Amanta Lunar Calendar.
