Every year on February 28, India celebrates National Science Day to mark the anniversary of ‘Raman effect’ by country’s greatest scientist Bharat Ratna Dr CV Raman. He contributed to the world of science and is known for the discovery of science phenomenon that he patented on this day in 1928. He was also honoured with the Nobel Prize in 1930.
The first National Science Day was celebrated in 1987. It took place after the National Council for Science and Technology Communication asked the Government of India to observe February 28 as National Science Day in order to mark the anniversary of Raman Effect in 1986.

On every National Science Day, the Centre felicitates scientists who played an eminent role in the field of science and innovation.
The theme will be chosen to increase public appreciation of the scientific problems involved and the impact of science on education, skills and career.
The main objective of the day is motivate students to come up with innovations in the field of science and technology.

Dr CV Raman, who was a renowned scientist did his bachelors and masters in Physics from the Presidency College in Madras. He was felicitated with Bharat Ratna for his contribution in the field of science in 1954. Other than Raman effect, he also made several other scientific discoveries like harmonic nature of the tabla and mridangam, and the optical behaviour of many pigmented materials.
