Israeli fashion designer and peace activist Ruth Dayan died on Thursday night at the age of 103, Israeli media reported on Friday. She was the first wife of former Israeli defence minister Moshe Dayan, one of the country’s most revered generals.
Ruth was the founder of the iconic Maskit fashion house, the designs of which celebrated the cultural legacy of Jewish immigrants as well as Israel’s Arab community. The world-famous brand Maskit was founded in 1954. Ruth was also a peace activist and supported Palestinians.

Born in 1917, the fashion designer spent her childhood in Nahalal. She tied the knot with husband Moshe in 1935. The couple was married for 37 years, divorcing in 1972 and had three children together.
Ruth was the mother of late Israeli actor-director Assi Dayan, late sculptor Udi Dayan and publicist and author Yael Dayan.
She was “an outstanding woman and a role model for entrepreneurs, who had boundless love for this place and its people, whoever they may be,” Israel’s largely ceremonial president, Reuven Rivlin, extended his condolences on Ruth’s passing.

“She determinately opposed the occupation and even against a wide consensus and overwhelming silence bravely made her voice heard,” rights group B’Tselem tweeted. “May her memory be a blessing.”
In her later years, Ruth served as a board member for B’Tselem, the group that documents human rights violations in the territories Israel seized in 1967, and was awarded the President’s Medal by the late Shimon Peres in 2014.
