Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday said his country has no plans to engage in a military alliance with China. He made the statements during a press briefing in New Delhi, where he arrived on Monday for a two-day bilateral visit.

Lavrov was responding to a media person who asked that if the growing political and military cooperation between the two nations (China and Russia) would lead to a strategic military alliance.

Calling their Russia-China bilateral relations highest in the history Lavrov dismissed the possibility of a possible military alliance with Beijing and said our ties will not pursue a military partnership.

Lavrov added said that he was made aware of a similar pro-military partnership is being promoted in the Middle East and Asia citing examples like Asia-NATO.

The Russian minister agreed with India’s stance on the military alliance issue and said, “India is on the same page as us on the topic of military partnership, We are of the opinion that such alliances are counterproductive and we (India and Russia) seek inclusive support that is for something and not against.

After concluding a productive meeting with the External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Lavrov is set to leave for Pakistan on Tuesday for two-day diplomatic meet.
