Outgoing President Donald Trump on Sunday vocally defended his decision to pull out of the Paris climate accord and alleged that the deal was ‘unfair and one-sided’ despite claims of President-Elect Joe Biden’s pledge of rejoining the historic agreement that was signed under the aegis of former president Barack Obama.
The United States formally exited the 2015 Paris Accord in October 2020 following President Trump withdrawal from the Paris deal in 2019. Trump termination of the climate accord made the USA the first country ever to withdraw from an international climate change agreement.
The 45th President of the United State who is yet to concede his election loss on the sidelines of the virtual G20 summit stated, “I withdrew the United States from the unfair and one-sided Paris Climate accord, a very unfair act for the United States.”
The 74-year-old who could only muster only 232 electoral college votes in his reelection campaign of 2020, further said, “The Paris accord was not designed to save the environment. It was designed to kill the American economy.”
The Republican nominee who claimed that mail-in fraud was rampant during the 2020 elections and has insisted that he won the election also added, “I refuse to surrender millions of American jobs and send trillions of American dollars to the world’s worst polluters and environmental offenders, and that’s what would have happened.”
The former President who aggressively championed the fossil fuel industry and repeatedly attacked opponent Joe Biden on the campaign trails over his green economic policy has repeatedly questioned the science of climate change and has also weakened other environmental protections, as per AFP report.
