At least four people were killed and numerous others were injured in a suspected suicide attack on a car on the campus of Karachi University in Pakistan on Tuesday. The explosion was claimed by the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a militant group based mostly in Balochistan province. According to the BLA, the attack was carried out by a female suicide bomber.

According to provincial information minister Sharjeel Memon, a bomb outside a Chinese language institute at the University of Karachi on Tuesday injured four persons. The authorities are investigating whether it was a suicide attack, according to Geo News.

Geo TV also aired CCTV footage of the incident, saying that a woman detonated the device near the car. According to Karachi Police Chief Ghulam Nabi Memon, the early investigation indicates that the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber. According to the film from the scene, a person dressed in the woman’s burqa from head to toe walked up to the van, followed by an instantaneous explosion.

Following the attack, the BLA issued a statement identifying the bomber as Shari Baloch or Bramsh, claiming she was the group’s first female bomber. According to the statement, the attack marked “a new chapter in the history of Baloch resistance.”

This is Pakistan’s first serious attack on Chinese people since the July 2021 bombing of a bus in Dasu, northwest Pakistan, which killed nine Chinese nationals. However, the Baloch insurgents did not claim responsibility for the incident. The incident was claimed by the Pakistani Taliban, also known as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. In that attack, four Pakistanis were also killed.
