Even with the NBA 2021-22 season kicking off today, the saga between Ben Simmons and the Philadelphia 76ers is far from over. On Tuesday, the Sixers suspended their star point guard for one game due to what the coach Doc Rivers called conduct detrimental to the team. Simmons will now miss the 76ers’ season opener on Wednesday night at New Orleans.  

The episode, which has now continued through the end of last season and through the entirety of the offseason, has led to heated up discussions on social media platforms. There’s very little support that Simmons has received at least on the social media platforms for actions.

Sports podcaster and commentator Dan Katz on Twitter said, “I’d love to talk to the guy in Ben Simmons circle who keeps reassuring him that every move he’s made is the correct one.”

“Fascinating twist of logic,” he further added.

Earlier in September, the 25-year-old star player told the managing authorities of the Sixers that he will not wear an NBA jersey again unless he is traded to another team. Since then he has tried to pull all kinds of strings to force a move out of the Sixers, including not turning up for the preseason.

But his on-field exploits last season hasn’t helped him either. Simmons shot 34% from the free-throw line in the postseason and was reluctant to attempt a shot from anywhere on the floor late in games. That led to him spending critical minutes on the bench.

The 25-year-old also missed a stunning 10 free throws in Game 5 against the Atlanta Hawks.

Meanwhile, basketball analyst Jay Bilas said: “Ben Simmons has been unprofessional, to put it mildly. Oddly, his behavior has hurt his trade value and his reputation, and it has made him far more difficult to move him for any fair value, something he claims to want.”

To put it straight, currently, Simmons has no takers and his actions only ruin his image for any future suitors. Even among the NBA fans, and definitely Philly fans, he hasn’t been the most popular.

His actions have attracted a lot of trolling alongside some strong criticism. Chess world champion Magnus Carlsen earlier in the day quipped: “Ben Simmons should try chess. I practice with my phone in my pocket all the time, and I don’t have to shot [shoot] 3s.”

A barrage of memes have followed since the news of suspension and is likely to continue as long as the player and the club fail to reach an agreement.
