India’s Agnipath scheme has set the country ablaze with protests by enraged defence aspirants who now remain uncertain about what lies after four years of service in the Indian Armed Forces.
What is the Agnipath scheme?
The Agnipath scheme aims to birth young Agniveers, who will be inducted into the forces and hold a distinct rank for a period of four years (including the training period).
“The Agnipath recruitment scheme is a transformative initiative that will provide a youthful profile to the armed forces,” Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, according to a report by Times Now.
“It would help to train them for new technologies and also improve their health levels. This scheme will increase employment opportunities with new skills in different sectors,” he added.

How can I apply under the scheme?
The armed forces will soon begin conducting rallies of recruitment across the country to induct 46,000 soldiers. However, enrollment will be done online through a centralized system for all three services- the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force. Special rallies and interviews will also take place at certain institutions such as Industrial Training Institutes.
One can also visit the official websites of the three forces for more information on the recruitment and eligibility process.

Who can apply?
Initially, both men and women between the ages of 17.5 and 21 were eligible to enroll on an “All India All Class” basis. However, due to the backlash, the upper age limit has been extended to 23 (one-time age relaxation).
Educational qualification
Qualifications for Agniveers differ, according to several categories. For instance, to be eligible for the post of General Duty (GD) soldier, the educational qualification is Class 10 with a minimum aggregate passing percentage of 45.
