Darius Lee has been indentified as the person killed in a mass shooting at a Father’s Day cookout in Harlem, New York City on Sunday night.

Lee was a 6-foot-6 guard who played for Houston Baptist University in Texas. He was from upper Manhattan. 

Darius Lee was pursuing his bachelor’s degree and was named HBU Robbie Robertson Male Student-Athlete of the Year. He had led the Huskies in scoring and rebounding and was sixth in the nation in steals per game.

“He was an innocent kid that was in school playing basketball. He cared about basketball. He decided to stay outside one day, and this is what happens. My brother’s gone. Great kid. He’s gone for no reason. I’ve been trying to figure it out myself,” Lee’s sister, Tiara, told The New York Post.

Officers responded around 12:40 a.m. to reports of a shooting on a footpath along FDR Drive and found several people wounded. Other victims went to hospitals on their own, officials said. Two women and seven men were shot near the intersection of East 139th Street and Fifth Avenue. 

“This Father’s Day weekend is a weekend where people were supposed to be able to enjoy themselves with their families,” NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said at a news conference.

Lee was taken to Lincoln Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. 

“He was an amazing young man, starting to get to the height of his athletic potential,” Chris Williams, who coached Lee at St. Raymond High School for Boys in The Bronx, said. 

“He was the model citizen, a great friend, an amazing kid. He was the best I’ve ever been a part of in my life. He was someone you wanted to root for, work with and work for and go the extra mile for,” the coach added.
