Illinois has set the stage for a rare incumbent versus incumbent matchup in the primary elections. Moreover, such a clash will be seen in two different Congressional districts at the same time. Illinois will go to polls on June 28th, 2022.

The state electoral authorities were forced to re-draw a map of Illinois’ Congressional districts for the primary elections after the recent census. The state lost a House seat due to population decline.

Illinois’ 15th district

Republican Rep. Mary Miller, first elected in 2020, is facing five-term Republican Rep. Rodney Davis on Tuesday for the GOP nomination for the 15th Congressional District. The area is known to be a Republican stronghold in central Illinois.

Miller is no stranger to controversy. She quoted Adolf Hitler shortly after winning her seat, saying during a rally that “Hitler was right on one thing. He said, ‘Whoever has the youth has the future.’”

She later apologized after Democrats in Illinois called for her resignation. She also voted against certifying Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election and is a member of the far-right House Freedom Caucus, according to reports from Associated Press.

Illinois’ 6th district

In suburban Chicago redistricting means both Democratic Reps. Sean Casten and Marie Newman are running for the state’s 6th Congressional District, a blue-leaning seat.

Newman is a progressive first elected in 2020, when she defeated longtime Rep. Dan Lipinski, one of Congress’ last anti-abortion Democrats. She faces an ongoing House Ethics Committee investigation over whether she promised federal employment to a political opponent.

Representative Sean Casten, on the other hand, managed to successfully flip a suburban Illinois seat in the 2018 midterm elections. This seat had been held by Republican lawmakers for decades, according to reports from Associated Press.
