In what comes as one of the biggest updates since Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksha fled the country early Wednesday, acting President and Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe has asked the parliament to nominate a PM ‘acceptable’ to all parties.

According to reports, Wickremesinghe asked the Speaker of the Parliament, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, to nominate a new Prime Minister, who will be acceptable by both the government and the opposition parties. This comes after reports of escalations of protests outside his office where at least one died.

In a statement released by the acting President and Prime Minister’s office, it was announced that the cabinet will back its decision which will be taken on July 11. It was also announced that the cabinet will hand over all of its duties once the agreement is in place to form an all-party government.

“On Monday, the Sri Lankan PM held a meeting with the Members of the Cabinet. All ministers who participated were of the opinion that as soon as there is an agreement to form an all-party govt, they’ll hand over the responsibilities to that government,” the statement said.

“Accordingly, the ruling party and opposition must form an all-party government. Acting President and PM Ranil Wickremesinghe has informed Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena to nominate a Prime Minister who is acceptable to both the government and opposition,” it added.

Following the news of President Gotabaya Rajapaksha fleeing the country, protesters burst into the Prime Minister’s office and raised the Sri Lankan national flag on the top of the building. Video footage also emerged on social media which showed protesters breaking down military defences and entering into the PM’s office amidst tear gas and water cannons. Following the PMO, the demonstrators have reached the speaker’s residence, which is close to the Sri Lankan parliament.

Meanwhile, following the declaration of a national emergency, Sri Lanka has also imposed nationwide curfew until Thursday morning.
