Democrat Aruna Miller made history on Tuesday after becoming the first Indian-American politician to win the race of Lieutenant Governor in the state of Maryland.

The 58-year-old is also the first south Asian woman to serve in a key position in America.

Miller, a former executive of Indian American Impact, was endorsed by the organization.

“There’s no place I’d rather be than with voters! Our community has pushed us to be our best selves this campaign and I cannot even begin to put my gratitude into words for your commitment and support,” she said in a tweet Wednesday morning as midterm elections voting was underway.

Who is Aruna Miller?

Aruna Miller is a former member of the Maryland House of Delegates representing Legislative District 15 in Montgomery County.

Born on born November 6, 1964, in Andhra Pradesh, India, her family moved to the United States when she was seven years old.

Along with her two siblings and parents, she lived in Poughkeepsie, New York. She attended public schools in Upstate New York and Ballwin, Missouri. Miller earned a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology. She became a citizen of the United States in 2000.

Miller ran for Congress in 2018 to represent Maryland’s 6th congressional district, and lost the Democratic primary to David Trone by 9.3%, with 30.7% of the vote compared to Trone’s 40.0%.

In 2021, Wes Moore chose Miller as his running mate in the Democratic primary of the 2022 Maryland gubernatorial election.

Miller’s net worth is approximately $1.5 million.

She is married to Dave Miller, with whom she has three daughters. She currently resides in Montgomery County. Miller’s mother lives with the family in Maryland.
