A female teacher was admitted to the hospital Friday afternoon after a shooting at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, police said. No students were injured during the incident. The extent of the teacher’s injuries is known at this time.

Richneck Elementary is a fully-accredited located at 205 Tyner Drive, off Jefferson Avenue. Dispatch received the first call about the shooting at around 2 pm.

According to Wavy, Newport News Public Schools said the person responsible for the shooting is in police custody. The school system informed the Richneck families via phone calls, email and posted it to social media about an hour after the incident.

Hundreds of parents were waiting outside the reunification center at 128 Deal Drive, anxious to be reunited with their children on Friday afternoon. Police officers on the spot separated parents in queues based on their child’s grades. There were 553 students enrolled at the school in the fall for the 2022-23 school year, according to the Virginia Department of Education.

Officers were requesting that parents and guardians have identification ready when they arrive to pick up their children. “We’re beginning the process to reunite parents with students,” police said in a news release. “More information will be released when it is available,” it added.

NNPD Chief Steve Drew spoke with the media on Friday afternoon and informed them that all the children have been moved to the gym after the incident and are safe. Drew also confirmed there was one location where gunshots were fired. “We did not have a situation where someone was going around the school shooting. We had a situation in one particular location where a gunshot was fired,” Drew said in a press conference.

According to NNPS, the school was on lockdown for about an hour before it was lifted.

Newport News is a city with a population of over 185,000 people, according to the US Census Bureau, about 40 miles out of Chesapeake and Virginia Beach. It is known for its connections to shipbuilding for the US Navy.
