Golden Globe Awards 2023 nominations: Biggest snubs of the year
- 80th annual Golden Globes nominations were released on Monday
- Keke Palmer's outstanding performance in Jordan Peele's horror/sci-fi film Nope went unnoticed
- The Best Supporting Actress - Motion Picture category did not honour Stephanie Hsu for Everything Everywhere All At Once
Tom Cruise, Will Smith, and Jennifer Lawrence were just a few of the famous people who were passed over as the nominations for the 80th annual Golden Globes were released on Monday morning.
Cruise, 60, was denied credit at the contentious awards ceremony, which was held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, despite the fact that his popular movie Top Gun: Maverick received a nomination for Best Picture – Drama.

Despite being the highest-grossing film of the year and receiving great praise from reviewers, the action sequel’s star, Tom Cruise, was conspicuously absent from the list of candidates.
It is significant to note, however, that Cruise returned his three previous Golden Globe awards to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association last year in protest of the group’s actions.
The HFPA may have intended to avoid controversy as Smith, 54, did not earn a nod for the movie Emancipation months after his controversial slap at Chris Rock at the Oscars, as the awards programme has been criticised for lacking diversity.
Lawrence, 32, was also passed up for the independent film Causeway.

Additionally, Keke Palmer‘s outstanding performance in Jordan Peele’s horror/sci-fi film Nope went unnoticed.
The romantic comedy Ticket to Paradise, starring Julia Roberts and George Clooney, which took in an astonishing $70 million at the global box office, also went unnoticed.
Despite giving an outstanding performance as Mamie Till-Mobley in the well-praised movie Till, rising star Danielle Deadwyler was not nominated for Best Actress – Motion Picture Drama.
The Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture category did not honour Stephanie Hsu for her work as Joy Wang in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

There was not a single woman who received a nomination for best director despite excellent competitors including Sarah Polley for Women Talking, Gina Prince-Bythewood for The Woman King, and Chinonye Chukqwu for Till. This was another rejection of female directors as a whole.
The contenders were: Steven Spielberg for The Fabelmans, Martin McDonagh for The Banshees of Inisherin, Baz Luhrmann for Elvis, Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan for Everything Everywhere All At Once, and James Cameron for Avatar: The Way of Water.
Only three women have ever won the best director award in the 80-year history of the award’s existence: Barbra Streisand for 1983’s Yentl, Chloe Zhao for 2020’s Nomadland, and Kane Campion for The Power Of The Dog (2021).

Major omissions also occurred in the television categories, with Yellowstone, the “anti-woke” neo-Western drama whose star Kevin Costner received a nomination for Best Television Actor – Drama Series, being the most noticeable.
Despite Jessica Chastain getting her ninth Golden Globe nomination for her work in the Showtime miniseries George & Tammy, Michael Shannon was not nominated for his portrayal of George Jones.
Barry, the critically praised HBO comedy starring Bill Hader, did not receive a nomination for Best Musical/Comedy Series, although Hader and Henry Winkler did.

The Globes have a reputation for being a glam, alcohol-fueled event that launches Hollywood’s award season and serves as a springboard for nominations and winners in their pursuit of Oscars.
However, the occasion was tarnished when a 2021 Los Angeles Times investigation into the association’s activities found that there were no Black members of the group. In response, Tom Cruise sent back his Golden Globe awards, and NBC, a longstanding broadcaster, cancelled the 2022 presentation.
Following the organization’s reforms, the Comcast-owned network agreed to broadcast the Globes once more in 2023. On January 10, the ceremony will also be streamed on Peacock.

Following the organization’s reforms, the Comcast-owned network agreed to broadcast the Globes once more in 2023. On January 10, the ceremony will also be streamed on Peacock.
Brendan Fraser, who was nominated for The Whale’s Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, had declared he would not attend the ceremony regardless of whether he won.
“It’s because of the history that I have with them,” Fraser said in an interview with GQ, “And my mother didn’t raise a hypocrite.”
Fraser claims that Philip Berk, a former HFPA president, sexually abused him in 2003 during a business gathering. Berk, who denies the incident, was later kicked out of the organisation for referring to Black Lives Matter as a “racist hate movement.”

After the uproar of the previous year, the HFPA prevented members from accepting gifts, increased the diversity of its voting body, and ended its in-person news conferences with celebrities, which were frequently mocked for the inappropriate behaviour of some members.
“This is really not the old HFPA anymore,” current HFPA President Helen Hoehne remarked in a recent interview.
‘I respect Brendan Fraser’s decision… And I personally, sincerely hope there’s a way for us to move forward and we are able to regain Mr Fraser’s trust, along with the trust of the entire entertainment community,” Hoehne added.
However, the Globes continue to divide prominent Hollywood publicists, with some voicing doubt about the revisions and a reluctance to attend the ceremony with their stars.
It has drawn criticism that US billionaire Todd Boehly, the new owner of the English football team Chelsea, plans to spin off the awards presentation into a for-profit organisation that will pay members money.
On January 10 at 8 pm EST/5 pm PST, the 80th annual Golden Globe Awards will air on NBC and the streaming platform Peacock.
