The fantasy comedy Barbie, starring Margot Robbie playing the title character, has finally arrived in theatres. The live-action movie, which the well-known actress-director Greta Gerwig is directing, is now getting outstanding feedback from viewers and is quickly becoming a hit.

However, viewers are now looking forward to a big announcement from the producers regarding a sequel as a result of the film’s excellent box office performance. Filmmaker Greta Gerwig hinted earlier that she would one day return with a sequel during an interview with People at the Barbie premiere.
“With this endeavor, a world and a variety of Barbie films are being launched. The earth is plainly so lovely, and there is a tone, humor, and delight. I want to return to Barbie Land,” the director said.

On another podcast, filmmaker Gerwig said: The main thing I’m focused on is the next 15 days and then I’ll see what happens after that. I will say I loved making it so much. It really allowed us to go in all these different directions and I don’t think any other movie would have afforded those opportunities. It was almost like I got to live out my dream of making a 1950s sound-stage musical, which I can’t imagine anything else would have been.”
Barbie grossed a staggering $22.3 million just in the previews, increasing the likelihood that there will be a sequel. Apart from this, Gerwig also once told PEOPLE that she hopes Barbie is “the launch of a world and a bunch of different Barbie movies.” She continued, “There’s a tone and a humor and a joy, and obviously the world is so beautiful. I want to go back to Barbie Land.”

Ynon Kreiz, CEO of Mattel, is optimistic about additional Barbie films. He told TIME, “We’re looking to create movies that become cultural events. If you can excite filmmakers like Greta and Noah [Baumbach] to embrace the opportunity and have creative freedom, you can have a real impact.”
