Popularly known as Babita from Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, Munmun Dutta has apologized for the use of a casteist slur in a video shared on her Instagram page on Sunday. The actor said she was ‘misinformed’ about the meaning of the term due to language barriers (she is Bengali).

Dutta said she was sorry that the term had been used. %u201CI sincerely would like to apologize to every single person who has been unintentionally hurt by the usage of the word and I sincerely regret the same.%u201D
Posting a message in English and Hindi on Twitter, the actor said she removed the video as she became aware of her error. Dutta also added that she has ‘utmost respect for everyone regardless of their ‘caste, creed or gender’ and she acknowledges their ‘immense contribution to our society or nation’.

Dutta has since removed the problematic section from her video, but the original is still doing the rounds on social media. In face of harsh and immediate criticism, the actor rushed to make amends, but she was also criticized for her apologies.
Reacting to her apology, Masaan’s director Neeraj Ghaywan, wrote in a tweet, “Has been misinterpreted? Never said it with intent to hurt? There is no other interpretation! You said the B-word and there is no way to cover it up. Apologize and shut up.”

Dutta recently topped headlines for using an offensive, casteist term in a YouTube video she had posted. Many netizens felt it was offensive and #ArrestMunmunDutta began to trend on social media. The actor issued an apology statement after she had faced the wrath of the netizens.
