Who is Ana de Armas?

Ana de Armas is a Cuban actor of Spanish origin, who got her Hollywood break with the movie ‘Knock Knock’, starring Keanu Reeves. The 34-year-old played a seemingly lost girl, in the 2015 film, who begins to show a wholly crazier side. 

Growing up in Havana, de Armas would watch Hollywood movies in her neighbour’s apartment, since her family didn’t have a DVD or video player. At the age of 12, she decided to become an actor and at the age of 14, in 2002, she’d successfully auditioned to be part of the National Theatre of Cuba. The actor often hitchhiked to attend the rigorous course and filmed three movies as a student. However, de Armas didn’t end up graduating from the Havana institute since Cubans mandated that graduates had to complete three years of community service. Instead, de Armas moved to Madrid and pursued her acting career.

While de Armas landed other Hollywood movie roles in ‘War Dogs’, the Jonah Hill crime-comedy, and the sports biopic ‘Hands of Stone’, the actor rose to prominence for her part as the holographic AI projection in Denis Villeneuve’s 2017 movie ‘Blade Runner 2049‘. 

She earned a Golden Globe nomination for her part as Marta Cabrera, in Rian Johnson’s ‘Knives Out’, the locked-room mystery detective story. de Armas saw herself appearing alongside Daniel Craig again after this outing when she played the part of Paloma in the British actor’s last outing as 007 in ‘No Time to Die‘.

The actor also appeared opposite Ben Affleck in ‘Deep Water‘, where the two play a couple in an open relationship, while Affleck’s character has homicidal tendencies and kills his wife’s lovers. The duo started dating in early 2020, after meeting on the set of the movie. They parted ways in January 2021.  

Ana de Armas will next appear in ‘The Gray Man‘ the Russo brothers’ Netflix movie, and Andrew Dominik’s ‘Blonde‘ where she plays Marilyn Monroe. The actor has also replaced Scarlett Johansson for the Apple TV film ‘Ghosted’, where de Armas will appear alongside her ‘Knives Out’ co-star Chris Evans.
