Who were Barry Humphries’ parents, Eric Humphries and Louisa Agnes?

Barry Humphries, the comedian known for his character Dame Edna Everage, died on Saturday at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, where he had been treated for various issues. He faced complications after hip surgery. He was 89 years old.

“He was completely himself until the very end, never losing his brilliant mind, his unique wit and generosity of spirit,” his family said in a statement.

His family including his wife Elizabeth Spender said he held on to his famed with until he passed away.

Barry is survived by his four wives, children, and 10 grandchildren.

Who were Barry Humphries’ parents?

Barry Humphries was born on February 17, 1934, in the suburb of Kew in Melbourne, Victoria.

His father Eric Humphries was a construction manager. Eric was born in 1905. His grandfather was an emigrant to Australia from England. Barry grew up in a well-to-do family in Christowel Street, Camberwell. His parents fondly called him ‘Sunny Sam’ bringing him all that he wished for.

His mother’s name was Louisa Agnes (1907-1984). Eric died in 1972.

In his teens, Humphries rebelled against the strictures of conventional suburban life by becoming an artist.

Barry attended Camberwell Grammar School. As his father’s construction business flourished, he was sent to Melbourne Grammar School where he matriculated with brilliant results in English and Art. He studied Philosophy and Fine Arts at the University of Melbourne for two years.

Barry Humphries has been married four times. In 1955, he tied the knot with Brenda Wright and separated in 1957. His second marriage was to Rosalind Tong. The couple tied the knot in 1959 and separated in 1970. In 1979, he got married to Diane Millstead. The two got separated in 1989.

In 1990, Humphries married Elizabeth Spender, a film and television actor.

Humphries has four children, Oscar Humphries, Tessa Humphries, Rupert Humphries, and Emily Humphries.
