Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas welcomed a baby girl via surrogacy, the couple announced on Friday.

What does surrogacy mean?

Surrogacy is an arrangement, often supported by a legal agreement, whereby a woman consents to bear a child for another person or people, who will become the child’s parent after birth.

There are two kinds of surrogate mothers, according to WebMD. A traditional surrogate is a woman who gets artificially inseminated with the father’s sperm. She is the baby’s biological mother.

In gestational surrogacy, a technique called “in vitro fertilization” (IVF) makes it possible to gather eggs from the mother (or an egg donor), fertilize them with sperm from the father (or a sperm donor), and place the embryo into the uterus of a gestational surrogate.

A gestational surrogate is called the “birth mother.” The biological mother is still the woman whose egg was fertilized.

There are many reasons why people may opt for surrogacy: if a woman is unable to become pregnant or carry a pregnancy, if she has a health condition that makes pregnancy risky, if a same-sex couple wishes to have a child, or if a single man wants to have a baby.

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas shared the news on social media on their respective accounts. She requested people to give her and her husband some “privacy” and thanked fans in anticipation for the same. They got married in 2018.

During an interview with Oprah Winfrey last year, Priyanka had opened up about starting a family with Nick.

“You know, you want to make God laugh and tell her your plans and I am not the one who makes those plans, but yes absolutely, whenever it’s the right time, it’s something that we definitely want,” she said.

Other Bollywood celebrities who have resorted to surrogacy are: Ekta Kapoor, Lisa Ray, Karan Johar, Kiran Rao-Aamir Khan, Gauri Khan-Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra, among others.
