At the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, the Indian team accomplished a remarkable feat. Eldhose Paul and Abdulla Aboobacker, two male triple jump competitors, finished first and second, respectively.
Aboobacker concluded at 17.02m, which he achieved in his fifth attempt, while Paul managed his greatest effort of 17.03m in his third attempt. Bermuda’s Jah-Nhal Perinchief took third place with a best leap of 16.92 metres.
India has won four gold medals in the triple jump at previous competitions, but this is the first time two of its athletes have placed on the podium. In the 1970 and 1974 events, Mohinder Singh Gill took home a bronze and a silver medal, while Renjith Maheswary and Arpinder Singh placed third in the 2010 and 2014 competitions.
India concluded the 2022 Games in fourth place after sporting powerhouses Australia, the hosts England, and Canada with a respectable 61 medals, 22 of which came from the top step of the podium. Intriguingly, India surprised New Zealand by winning 4 gold medals on the penultimate day of the competition—3 in badminton and 1 in table tennis.
The Commonwealth Games 2022 were officially bid farewell to by Birmingham late on August 9th with a magnificent closing ceremony that honoured the multicultural legacy of the city in front of a sold-out 30,000-person Alexander Stadium audience.
