How is the World Hindi Day different from the Hindi Diwas

Hindi is one of the two official languages of India and the fourth most-spoken first language in the world after Mandarin, Spanish and English. January 10, 2021, marks the 15th World Hindi Day in India as it was first observed in 2006 by then Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh. 

World Hindi Day is observed on January 10 every year as it marks the anniversary of the first World Hindi Conference which was held by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975 while Hindi Diwas is celebrated by Indians on September 14 every year.

World Hindi Day focuses on the promotion of the Hindi Language at a global level and National Hindi Diwas, which is celebrated throughout the nation marks the adaptation of Hindi, written in Devanagari script as the official language. 

The first world Hindi conference was held on January 10, 1975 and it was attended by imminent personalities from all over the world with Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the PM of Mauritius being the first Chief Guest.

Over the years, several other countries including United Kingdom, United States, Mauritius, Trinidad and Tobago have hosted the World Hindi Conference. 

NRIs and people of the Indian origin who take pride in the language also organise events to celebrate the day so as to spread awareness and the greatness of Hindi.

Here are a few things you should know about Hindi: 

• Not only India, but also the Hindi language is also spoken in countries like Nepal, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, Fiji and Mauritius. Hindi and Nepalese languages are both written in the Devanagari Script.

• It is one of the very few languages that can be used to make URLs for websites.
• English words such as shampoo, bandana, cashmere, verandah, cot, etc have originated from Hindi.
