Balwinder Safri, a Punjabi singer based in the United Kingdom, died on Tuesday, shortly after being released from the hospital. He was 63.

The late singer was a Bhangra superstar, with hit songs such as ‘O Chan Mere Makhna’, ‘Pao Bhangra’, ‘Gal Sun Kuriye’, and ‘Nachdinu’.

He underwent triple bypass surgery at Wolverhampton’s New Cross Hospital. His brain was damaged as a result of complications during the surgery. He then went into a coma and was released from the hospital after nearly 86 days. He showed some signs of improvement during treatment, but he did not survive and died on July 26, 2022, according to Stars Unfolded. Various Punjabi celebrities expressed their grief following his death.

Safri had an estimated net worth between $1 to 5 million as per Tv Guide. 

He was married to Nikki Davitt. The couple has two children. Safri also has a step daughter, Priya Kumari.

He performed many popular Punjabi songs, including ‘O Chan Mere Makhna’ , ‘Tere Ishqe Ne’ and ‘Rahe Rahe Jaan Waliye’.

His father used to sing Gurbani and Shabad Kirtan at various gurdwaras when he was a child. He used to accompany his father to gurdwaras, which sparked his interest in singing. He used to sing patriotic songs in school’s morning assembly and other competitions while studying. His guru, Jaswant Bhawra, taught him the fundamentals of Indian classical music.

He moved to Canada in 1980 and began working as a tailor in a cloth manufacturing factory. On weekends, he used to sing with various music groups.

He performed ‘Jad Lagiya Chotta Ishqiya Diya’ for the first time on television in 1985. He formed his music group – Safri Boys, with six members in 1990 after a few years of working with the musical ensembles. Safri Boys produced a number of Punjabi songs and music albums that were very well-liked in Canada and India.

Balwinder Safri contributed vocals to numerous Punjabi music albums, including Get Real (2010), Kar Shukar Khuda Da (1994), Another Level (1999), Inferno (2000), and (2014). He was given the Brit Asia IV Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019 as per Stars Unfolded.
