Indian weddings are known for being frustratingly late. Not only do host families take off more than they can chew in a limited amount of time, but certain unanticipated hold-ups, such as an angry fufa or too much dancing in a baarat, may make an already long day feel like a preview for what’s to come later.

However, a strange occurrence that just occurred in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, appears to imply that performing anything less than customary may be taken personally, not to mention result in defamation litigation worth half a crore rupees.

Ravi, a groom from the Haridwar district’s Bahadurabad village, was sued for defamation by his friends for allegedly ‘dumping’ them when he left with the baarat on his wedding day earlier than anticipated.

According to media reports, the companions who were left behind saw it as an attack on their “dignity” and filed a lawsuit against the groom for Rs. 50 lakh in damages.

Ravi had requested one of his buddies to assist him in sending out wedding invitations. His friend, Chandrashekhar, consented to assist with the save-the-dates, which said that the baarat, or wedding procession, was scheduled to leave at 5.

However, the groom’s companions arrived for the baarat only to discover that it had gone before the clock struck five.

Confused Chandrashekhar contacted Ravi to demand an explanation for what had occurred, and to make matters worse, the groom instructed all of his companions to return home because they were “late.”

It didn’t sit well with Chandrashekhar, who hired a lawyer and filed a lawsuit against his friend. His accusations include being mentally abused by the wedding guests he was entrusted with inviting.

Ravi is now being sued for Rs. 50 lakh in a slander suit by a friend.
