This week, the northeast has been pounded by torrential rain. Over the previous three days, 39 people have died in Assam and Meghalaya.

Heavy rain has been falling in the Northeast for more than a week, with some locations getting record-breaking amounts. In the 24-hour period commencing at 8.30 a.m. on June 16, Mawsynram in Meghalaya, the wettest spot on earth, received 100 cm of rain.

A video of a raging waterfall in the town has received a lot of attention and has been extensively shared on social media. Water gushing across a bridge was seen on camera by visitors, with two automobiles waiting to let it pass.

In the footage, a guy can be heard remarking, “These are not clouds, but water.”

“Oh my god!” shrieked a lady repeatedly.

The driver, on the other hand, began moving the automobile ahead. They begged him to stop, terrified. They said, “There are kids in the car.”

According to some accounts, this is the most rain that Mawsynram has seen in a 24-hour period in the past 81 years.

According to the Hindustan Times, 39 people have perished in Assam and Meghalaya in the previous three days as a result of the severe rain. There have been 90 deaths so far this monsoon season.

Flooding has harmed 26 million people in Assam. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister, has directed district authorities to offer all feasible assistance to the people.

Conrad Sangma, his Meghalaya counterpart, has given compensation of Rs 4 lakh for each of the deceased’s families.

Rain is expected to persist in the region for the next two days, according to the India Meteorological Department.
