Pakistan has removed the statue of poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal from Lahore’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park after being widely criticised on social media simply because the statue didn’t look like the legendary poet, who is considered to be among the most prominent artists of the modern era.

Pakistan’s Twitter users began trolling the sculpture, which was unveiled on country’s 73rd Independence Day on August 14 last year, after they noticed that it does not resemble Iqbal in any way. While some people got offended by the statue, many started posting humorous memes on the microblogging site.

“I strongly demand to remove this. It is an insult to Allama Iqbal, and get it done by a professional sculpture,” a Twitter user wrote.

“Dr Allama Iqbal a revolutionary Pakistani the visionary of Pakistan deserves a better sculpture than this! Hope the authorities remove this sculpture and get an expert to re-create it,” another said.
