On this day 10 years ago, the Indian cricket team made history by winning the cricket World Cup. The day marks a decade of  the then captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni hitting Sri Lankan pacer Nuwan Kulasekara for a six to give India its second cricket World Cup trophy.

Held in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, the tournament saw the champions being favourites right from the beginning. However,  they faced some stiff competition from teams such as England, South Africa, Australia and Sri Lanka in the final.

On Friday, several members from the cricket fraternity, including players who were part of the world cup winning squad reacted to the day on social media.

Current India coach Ravi Shastri, who was then a commentator, said, “A day that will always be etched in the memory of every Indian cricket lover. Well done guys!”
