Cristiano Ronaldo opens up on Manchester United exit after Portugal’s FIFA World Cup 2022 win vs Ghana

Cristiano Ronaldo was asked about his controversial exit from Manchester United after Portugal‘s 3-2 win over Ghana in their FIFA World Cup 2022 opener on Thursday. The 37-year-old said that the chapter is closed now.

Ronaldo scored a penalty in Portugal’s win. 

“That chapter is closed. The rest does not matter,” Ronaldo said in his two-minute press conference.

After falling and securing a penalty, Ronaldo scored the first goal of the day by either sides as he led Portugal to a 1-0  lead. The game soon heated up with either sides scoring goals but eventually Portugal won the match 3-2.

Ronaldo has been in the news recently for the controversial interview with journalist Piers Morgan and his subsequent exit from Manchester United. While speaking to Morgan, Ronaldo spoke of the problems he faced under manager Erik ten Hag at United and how he felt several people in the club wanted him out of it.

Ronaldo, who first left United in 2009, spoke on how he felt things had not changed compared to the times when he was there under Sir Alex Fergusson’s mentorship. He went out against Erik ten Hag, saying he doesn’t respect anyone who doesn’t respect him.

Ronaldo’s outspoken interview ensured that his tussle with the club only got bigger, eventually resulting in him parting ways with the club, it seems to not have affected his play. With Thursday’s goal, he not only became the oldest goal scorer for Portugal at 37 years of age, but also became the first person to score goals in 5 World Cups (starting in 2006 and scoring in all the cups since then).

Portugal next takes on Uruguay on November 29 at 12.30 am at Lusail Stadium, Lusail. For Uruguay it will be a must win game as they failed to capitalize on their chances and eventually had to settle for a draw against Korea earlier on Thursday.
