World no 1 and five time World Champions Brazil booked their spot in the round of 16 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup after a 1-0 win over Switzerland in their second Group G encounter on Thursday.

In the day’s other encounter in Group G, both Cameroon and Serbia scored their first points of the tournament after a high scoring 3-3 draw at the Al Janoub stadium, Qatar. The final day of play in group G on Saturday will see heavy action with three remaining teams trying to qualify.

With both Cameroon and Serbia capable of only a maximum of 4 points at the end of the Group stage, Brazil is guaranteed a spot in round of 16. Brazil also has a healthy goal difference (GD) of +3, which means it would require a herculean effort from Switzerland to replace Brazil atop the group.

The Swiss would need to win by at least a 3-goal margin and also hope that Brazil loses to Cameroon without scoring a goal.

Qualification for Switzerland is easier than coming first, with a victory of any sorts ensuring it. However, a draw can make things dicey as then a Cameroon victory could see the two teams being tied and the team with higher GD qualifying to the knockouts.

For the teams at the bottom, a win is mandatory followed by favourable results. The chances for Cameroon seem the least as they take on favorites Brazil in the last match and are underdogs. That makes things relatively easier for Serbia as they can eliminate the Swiss with a win and progress to the round of 16, provided Cameroon doesn’t upset Brazil.
